EPISODE SUMMARY:
The secret of successful coaching business
Joanne started a coaching cert certification at the same time as 200 other people. There's only about eight of them that have actually made a successful coaching business. Johanne’s says “It's not because we're better, it's not because we're different.
You've got to be willing to take the little steps every single day and when something didn't go right, evaluate, ask yourself what worked? what didn't work? What could I do differently? Versus going, oh my God, I'm a piece of crap. I can't do this.
You have to learn how to manage your thoughts and be committed and courageous to do the uncomfortable things no matter what.
There's the big difference between being an employee and being a business owner, like an entrepreneur. As an employee, we're told what to do. There's a process, there's a structure, there's a flow, there's usually guidelines or there's operational manuals. There's something or somebody that we can go to that will direct us and correct us if we're not doing things in the right way. But when you're a business owner, you are the person that's fully responsible for it. If it's going to happen, it's up to you.
Many businesses fail because most entrepreneurs don't get a coach in their first year. They try to do it themselves and they wait the year to realise, this isn't working.
Most people will start off following the same flow as what they did as an employee and wait for it to happen. Expect somebody to come along and fix it for them. Expect to get this epiphany or something that they find on Google or a freebie will change everything for them. But that's not the way when you're a business owner. You have to step into that responsibility and ask yourself who do I need support from and what do I need support with to make it happen?
It's about a positive attitude and asking yourself the right questions: How I can make it happen? and NOT can it happen? Will it happen? What happens if this goes wrong?
You've got to work on your mindset every day.
Start the day with question what's my intention today? What do I want to create today? What’s my goal, my vision? What is that specific thing for that day?
What do I need support with?
And who do I need support from to make it happen?
And another thing that people often don't think of to ask themselves is who do I need to be in order to make it happen? So, there's some days where I wake up and I'm like, oh my God, this is huge what I'm going to do. But today, courage and vulnerability are like a non-negotiable. Like that's where I've got to be. I've got to be vulnerable in the fact that I'm unsure, I feel scared, I've got the butterflies in my tummy again, and I've got to be courageous and go for it anyway.
Three big lies that people tell themselves that keep them stuck
01. I don't have the time.
If you are saying I don’t have time, I'll do it later when the kids will grow up, I have an awful lot on my plate at the moment, that really means that you're not choosing to make it a priority. And I always say, because I am a mother. If something happened to my daughter, I wouldn't think twice about going and being there for her because that's a priority. You've got to treat your business the same way. This is your baby. You are responsible for your business.
02. I don't have the money.
We make decisions based on what our current reality is, but we can never get to where we want to be based on our current situation. I invested in my mentor, despite I had no money, because I knew that I will earn that back and I was never going to figure it out myself. And the thing is, you will always find money from somewhere. Like most people have savings, most people have access to credit cards and are afraid to use them. That goes back to you, not trusting yourself that you're going to get there, you're not going to get the return on the investment.
If it’s you, work on your self-image and self-belief first
Nobody else can make it happen for us. Like I always say, any strategy will work, but it's down to the person that's applying it as whether or not it'll work. We put conditions on things. It's like, yes, that sounds great, but here's my terms of conditions as to why I'm not going to do that, you know?
03. I need to do things in my own time, I’m not ready yet.
The truth is you will be never ready. Johanne says: Whenever I talk about my successes or my client's success, people think, it's well for you, you have the confidence, you have X, Y, and Z. And that's not true.
Every day I get up and I make a decision, a committed decision to follow through.
Integrity and commitment are the biggest problems that entrepreneurs have and that's what stops them from following through. It's not anything else. You're going to feel uncomfortable; you're going to feel afraid, but you have to be committed and follow through. If you say you will do something, do it. If you don't want to do something, say you don't want to do it. And the same thing is if you've committed to something but you're only have like dipping your toe in and you're like, well, if something else happens that's more important or that makes me feel more comfortable, I'll jump back.
How long did it take to earn your first €25k as a coach?
Johanne: It was 10 months. I made no money in the first six months of my business and then I got one client. It was like, it's all going to happen now. But then nothing for two months. At this stage I had hired a new business coach and stuff was happening in the background and then the eighth month happened and boom, my first 10k month happened and I was like, oh my god.
Then for the next six weeks I had nothing. Nothing. Because my old patterns were still there.
I was still going back to what I knew. It was like, you've achieved this, so now you can stop. It wasn't until month 10, that I had another big month €15k or maybe it was €17k. And then I went into launch cycles and was taken in multiple five figures whenever I launched.
How to overcome self-doubts when your current results are far from what you want?
It’s not easy to disconnect yourself from your current results, especially when you have a bad month and there is no clients and money coming in. I asked Johanne how to re-focus yourself on your progress and goals instead.
Johanne: I've never stopped working on my mindset, my leadership and my ways of being. I have continuously had mindset and leadership mentors as well as like my business and strategy mentors because we all have blind spots.
My mindset work is a non-negotiable every day. I work on my thoughts and release them every day.
I used to have it on my wall, all the ways that my fear would show up. I work on my thoughts and release them every day. I'd be like, I see these thoughts, they're not supporting me. And I'd picture them in a bubble and I'd say, I love you. I set you're free. And I'd push it away. I won’t go to bed without releasing my bad thoughts.
What I learned was there's months where clients don't come in and it is so uncomfortable. Particularly if you feel that, you know, you've started this business and other people maybe don't agree with you or are not fully supportive of it, you start to feel pressure.
But what I found is when you focus on everything that's going wrong, you attract more of the same things and you just waste your time and energy. If you think about how much time you're spending on that, it actually is taken away from the stuff that would generate the money or would generate clients and leads.
Let yourself have like a 15-minute pity party. Release your emotion and then reset and refocus yourself again.
Feel your feelings, say them loud, cry, scream, shout whatever you need to do and let them out because when we keep them in our head, they go into our body and turns into anxiety and overwhelm or chronic pains. Once you release your emotions, you need to reset yourself. You can have a little dance, a shower, exercise, go for a walk, listen to a meditation or write a list of things that you’re grateful for, whatever resets you.
And then refocus again.
What is my intention?
What do I want to create today?
Who do I need support from and what do I need support with?
How to overcome the shiny object syndrome
Shiny object syndrome is a continuous state of distraction brought on by an ongoing belief that there is something new and better worth pursuing. So instead of working your plan you constantly jumping from one strategy to the other, from one freebie to other hoping it will give you the results quicker.
Johanne: Be really honest with yourself and be vulnerable. Ask yourself what is it that I really want and how am I going to get there and accept that it's up to you to get there. There is no magic source out there. I needed 3 coaches to make a committed decision to stick and follow just one plan.
By the time I had made my first €10 k, I had my third business coach. The first coach I had, I refused to do what she told me because I didn't feel comfortable doing it. Now I do it because it makes sense to do it. My second coach, I thought she was too wishy-washy. It wasn't until my third one whose personality was like mine. I decided, I will do whatever she tells me to do.
The lesson in this was make sure that you're, find somebody that you're connected with, that you feel aligned with and then follow exactly what they tell you to do. If you tweak it, that doesn't mean that you can't put your own flare on it, but if you tweak it and you don't follow the process exactly how they've told you to, that's where the struggles come in and that's where the frustrations come in.
What you should focus on, when you have only limited time to work?
Time block and be intentional so that you can focus on what's important. If you only have an hour a day, what is it that you're creating? Have a plan and work the plan. Avoid distractions.
Thank you Johanne for sharing.
