In the busy digital world, having a great website is just the start. What makes a huge difference? Keywords. These are the words people type in Google to find what they're looking for. As someone who designs websites for female entrepreneurs using Squarespace, I know that picking the right keywords can make your website really stand out.
Finding the Best Keywords
Let's brainstorm! Start by thinking about the people you want to attract to your site. What would they search for? Asking your previous clients can give us some excellent ideas. Also, I found a helpful article in Squarespace Help section that might spark more ideas.
Here's what they suggest to think about:
Your Audience: What words would they use in Google to find your services? What do they want? What problems do they have? It might help to ask other people, like friends or coworkers, what they'd enter in search engines if looking for your content or services.
Your Services: List each of your products or services, and add multiple words that describe it, be specific. For example, not just coaching but group life coaching for women over 40.
Your Brand: List words that describe what your site and brand is about, like your company name, your industry, and your specialties.
Checking Competitors: · Take a look at your competitors' websites. What words do they use? What words do they avoid? What words do you search for when looking for their sites?
Synonyms: Think of different ways of saying any of the keywords on your list. For example, 4th of July, Fourth of July, July 4th, July 4, and July Fourth are all different keywords.
Related words: Type the words you've come up with in Google, and review the related searches it suggests. Add these to the list if they relate to your site.
Once you’ve done your list, check your keywords "difficulty". It’s a combination of how broad it is, how often people search for it, and how many other websites are trying to rank for it. While you may want to try for a couple of difficult keywords, it's smart to mix in keywords that are easier to rank for as well.
To select and prioritize my keywords I use Keywords Everywhere but there is many options out there. You may also check Google Ads Keyword Planner, Semrush, Ahrefs, Moz Keyword Explorer, Ubersuggest or AnswerThePublic.
Avoid "Keyword stuffing"
Add keywords to your website copy in a clear, natural way that makes sense to humans. "Keyword stuffing" is off-putting to visitors and may count against you in search engine results. An effective method to incorporate more keywords into your website is through blogging. Create content centered around your chosen keywords. Squaresace Help suggests:
To get started, think about the keyword, and consider
What is a person searching for that phrase trying to achieve?
What could you provide on your site that would interest them?
How can you link from the new content to other areas of your site?
What content about this already exists on other sites, and how could you approach the topic differently or better?
The Power of Consistency
SEO takes time. Neil Patel, an expert in this field, talks about the traffic it can bring, but it's not a quick fix. According to his research on average, in the first 6 months, you may expect an increase in organic search traffic by 11.4%, in the second year, an increase of 49.4% over the 1st year, and in year three you can expect an increase of 30.7% when you actively focusing on your SEO. It means you are continually pushing out new content on a monthly basis, growing your backlink count and optimizing your website load.
Tracking Keyword Performance
You need to regularly check, adjust, and make sure your website content matches what people are looking for. As time passes, continue to check your rankings, replace low-performing keywords, update your content, and track your competitors and visitor activity to ensure your site stays relevant. SEO is a journey that requires dedication and persistence. As your Squarespace web designer, I'm committed to not just creating beautiful websites but also ensuring they get noticed by the right audience.
